Growing up out on the prairie, winter had a way of reminding you who was boss. This piece brings back a cold memory that still makes me smile—a young’un hunched over, racing the wind to the outhouse. Life was simpler, not easier. This bronze started as a fire ceramic back in 1975—one of my earliest pieces—now brought into bronze for the first time in honor of 50 years of sculpting. There’s humor in it, sure, but also the grit and grit-your-teeth kind of living that shaped a generation.
