Bronze Sting: A Symbol of Yellow Jacket Pride
When I got the call to sculpt Sting, the mascot of Black Hills State University, I knew I’d be creating something special for a place that means a lot to me. As a 1977 graduate of BHSU, it felt like coming full circle to give back to the university that helped shape my journey. Thanks to the generous Alice Wiggins Dunn endowment through the BHSU Foundation, this bronze sculpture now stands proudly at the entrance to the Donald E. Young Sports and Fitness Center.
Sting, perched atop a steel base, serves as more than just a mascot—it’s a beacon of school pride, welcoming students, alumni, and visitors alike. For those looking to bring a piece of that pride home, I’ve also created miniature replicas of the bronze sculpture. All proceeds from the sale of these miniatures go directly to supporting scholarships for future Yellow Jackets.
So, whether you’re stopping by the BHSU Bookstore for some gear, picking up your Yellow Jacket license plates, or admiring Sting in bronze, you’re showing your support for this great university and helping keep the spirit of BHSU alive for the next generation of students.
Go Yellow Jackets!
